New waste management regulations will enter into force gradually.
New separate collection obligations in central and Ruka built-up areas will come into force as of 1.6.2021. The new obligations will cover both terraced houses and blocks of flats used as permanent or holiday homes. New waste management regulations for other types of property will enter into force as of 1.1.2023.
Waste management regulations target at directing waste management in Kuusamo area in compliance with the Waste Act and circular economy principles. The objective is not only to attain but exceed both national and EU level recycling targets. In conformance with the objectives, 65% of municipal waste should be recycled by 2035. Waste management regulations are provided for sorting and recirculation of different types of refuse and waste materials. The regulations aim at ensuring efficient waste management, which does not cause any environmental damage.
The new obligations will cover all terraced houses and blocks of flats in the built-up area.
The properties have to have waste and recycling bins for waste collection as follows:
- combustible waste
- bio-waste
- waste paper
- small metal items
- glass packages
- carton and cardboard packages
- plastic packages
Bio-waste can be composted on the site by the residents.
Waste management regulations will be updated also regarding waste and recycling bins and the waste collection schedules.
A waste bin can be a 660 litre container with a lid, a semi-underground container; or a container suitable for the temporary storage of exceptional waste items or a very large quantity of waste for a short period of time.
